The Seafood Sales & Service story begins in 1967, when Abe Bielski graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in economics. Eager to get to work, Abe took a job loading trucks for a seafood distributor in Jacksonville, Florida. Over the years, he worked his way up the corporate ladder and became a top national accounts seafood salesperson and later a procurement manager, while raising a son and daughter with his wife, Shirley.
Abe’s son, Dave, followed his father’s footsteps and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Food Resource Economics and later earned a Masters Degree in Marketing. After graduation, Dave took a job in medical sales and moved to South Florida. He enjoyed the relationship building but on trips back to Jacksonville he and Abe always found themselves dreaming of starting their own company. Those dreams turned into a business plan and in 2000, Abe and Dave co-founded Seafood Sales and Service, a distributor of frozen seafood in Jacksonville, Florida.
With the combination of Abe’s experience in the seafood industry and Dave’s education and background, SS&S has continued to grow year after year. The company has also earned the highest credit rating from both Dunn & Bradstreet® and Seafax.
At SS&S, we pride ourselves on providing personalized service. There is no bureaucracy here — you deal directly with people who are committed to knowing you and your business needs, as well as finding solutions that will help you succeed. Because we don’t have to answer to shareholders, we are able to operate on thinner margins, a competitive advantage that translates into lower prices. Doing business this way has helped us build a loyal customer base, and much of our new business comes to us by way of referrals from satisfied customers.
Rather than become a “jack of all trades and a master of none,” we are a wholesale company that specializes in frozen seafood — a niche that offers a number of advantages, not the least of which is the fact that our products are fresher than seafood that is stored on ice. Being focused on a single commodity also makes it easy to keep our finger on the pulse of the seafood market. The ability to forecast trends means we’re adept negotiators, able to buy products at the best prices and pass the savings along to our customers.
